Robot Apocalypse is a large-scale mural by Alexa Ternes, created in 2025 for the courtyard at The Freight Yard.

The work draws on science-fiction and post-apocalyptic imagery, with a mechanical figure at the center of the composition. Its scale transforms an otherwise utilitarian courtyard wall into a piece of immersive public art.

Behind the Mural

The photograph shown here captures Robot Apocalypse while it was being painted, rather than the finished mural.

The numbers, letters, geometric shapes, and other symbols visible across the wall are part of Alexa Ternes's working method. She uses these temporary marks as a spatial reference system, allowing her to locate elements of the original image accurately as she enlarges it to architectural scale.

As she works across the wall, the reference marks are progressively painted over and disappear beneath the completed mural.

That makes this photograph particularly interesting. It records a stage visitors normally never see: the underlying roadmap used to turn a smaller composition into a full-scale mural.

About the Artist

Alexa Ternes created Robot Apocalypse at The Freight Yard in 2025. Her process combines the planning and precision required for a large architectural surface with the direct, hand-painted character of mural and street art.  She lives in Greer, South Carolina.
